Dear Parents,

Summer break is around the corner! One sure way your child can gain a growing vocabulary and find meaning in more words is reading to him/her every night.  If your child is exposed to rich conversation, the more words he/she will know and understand. Summer is the season when you can do the most activities with your children because they are home more often and will want to stay occupied.

Let us work hard the last few days in first grade. Every minute counts! ;-)

Literacy

We read the story The Surprise Family. In this story the hen thinks a boy is its mother. Later, the hen thinks she hatches some chicks, but she is mistaken.

High Frequency Words:  baby, edge, enough, garden, only, sharp, together, watched. Words with vowel pairs oi, oy, aw, au; suffixes -ful, -ly, -y like boy, carefully, fluffy, fuzzy, fuzzy, hawk, pointed, saw, taught

Math

We did Topic 19 quiz on fractional parts. Topic 20 is our last topic for grade 1. It is about adding and subtracting with tens and ones. The students will learn how to add and subtract two-digit numbers. Our new math vocabulary word: regroup

Science

We started a new chapter on  Observing Objects, with vocabulary words like, matter, magnify, property, weigh, magnet, attracts, repel, sink and float. The students used their senses to classify objects.

Social Studies

Our new chapter, Unit 6 is about The Marketplace. We will learn;

• Why goods are important?
• What kinds of jobs people do?
• Why people buy and sell?
• How goods are made in a factory?

Art

We drew roosters on white paper, with a frame. We used pastels, crayons and orange paint as background color.
